60 for 60

You can be a part of Community Action and help CVCAA celebrate 60 years of impact in our communities!

Unfortunately, many Americans live on the outskirts of hope–some because of their poverty, and some because of their color, and all too many because of both. Our task is to help replace their despair with opportunity.
This Administration today, here and now, declares unconditional war on poverty, in America. I urge this Congress and all Americans to join with me in that effort.
It will not be a short or easy struggle, no single weapon or strategy will suffice, but we shall not rest until that war is won. The richest Nation on earth can afford to win it. We cannot afford to lose it.
President Lyndon B. Johnson State of the Union, January 8, 1964

On August 20th, 1964, President Johnson signed the Economic Opportunities Act. This legislation is considered the cornerstone of the War on Poverty. It created programs such as Job Corp, Head Start, VISTA, and Rural and Urban Community Action Programs which eventually became Community Action Agencies.

For 60 years, the nation’s Community Action Network has inspired a spirit of hope, helped millions of people each year change their lives, and improved communities all across America. While strategies and solutions have evolved over time, the vision of Community Action has remained clear. We believe in a nation that creates opportunities for all people to thrive, builds strong, resilient communities, and ensures a more equitable society.

To celebrate this milestone, we are asking clients, donors, volunteers, and other members of the community to join us by sharing their own stories of Community Action. Through pictures, words, or even videos you can share how Community Action has impacted your life or why you support our efforts. Through these stories, we hope to reduce the stigma attached to asking for help and encourage more people in the Concho Valley to get involved.
